CL55 Overview
Based on the flagship S-Class sedan, the CL-Class' naming might confuse some folks into thinking it shares components with the C-Class or CLK-Class. Well, it doesn't. Regardless of its quirky nomenclature, this stylish and swoopy version of the company's top-of-the-line coupe debuted in 2000, replacing the more squarish and upright 1993-to-1999 version. The CL55 AMG, a high-performance version of the CL500, arrived for 2001. Like other AMG products, the CL55 features mechanical upgrades that help to improve acceleration, braking and handling. The star of the show is the car's supercharged 5.4-liter V8 engine. It develops 493 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, both of which are significantly more than what the CL500 is capable of. Other changes include 19-inch wheels with 245/40R19 tires in front and 275/35R19s in back, larger brakes and altered suspension tuning. An active suspension system, called Active Body Control (ABC), helps this big coupe handle like a much smaller sports car. The system helps to minimize or eliminate unsettling movements, such as body roll while cornering and squat and dive under acceleration and braking. Another high-tech feature is the PreSafe system, which can anticipate an imminent accident, and automatically tighten the seatbelts and position the power seats to afford the best protection for the occupants.
Six years on, the CL55 AMG is still a desirable choice for a large high-performance coupe. It's certainly a better value than the V12-powered CL65 AMG as it delivers similar performance for a dramatically lower price. (For buyers with robust financial means, value is probably a minor consideration, at which point the more desirable CL65 is the obvious choice.) Other diverse options in this class include the Jaguar XKR and Maserati Coupe. Although each competitor has unique advantages, the Mercedes is still fast, luxurious, stately and packed with features. If those attributes appeal to you then the CL55 AMG is a great car to have in your garage.
